In the fall of 1998 I was searching the Web for a rental cabin in the mountains of north Georgia. After about 30 minutes of searching the top directories and search engines, I had found only a dozen or so. I could not believe this. I knew for a fact that there are hundreds of cabin rentals available in the mountains of north Georgia. There had to be many, many more with Web sites.
I went back to the search engines. I methodically went through the results (sometimes hundreds of pages deep) bookmarking and categorizing links pertinent to north Georgia. I spent hours doing this. I made my wife, Ginny, do the same. Eventually, we had bookmarked hundreds of Web sites.
With the hours we spent searching the web came this realization: the Web has grown to big for any one Web site to catalogue; there is a real need for comprehensive, niche-market Web directories. Over the next few months we turned our north Georgia bookmarks into GeorgiaGetaway.com, and our spare room into the offices of Bob and Weave Enterprises.
In December 2000 CarolinaGetaway.com was launched, covering the North Carolina Mountains. Future Web Guides will cover the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine.
